08085 Run/Walk/Sit

Saturday June 12, 2021
Registration Information

Location

Lock Ave Park
Woolwich Township, NJ 08085

Greetings: We hope that all are safe and are ready for a fun race. Due to the pandemic we have made some changes that we hope will allow us to conduct a safe event that will let you enjoy running a live race without compromising your health. Mask wearing and social distancing will be practiced whenever possible. Runners may remove masks while running. The 8K and 5K courses have been changed for several reasons. First, the paved connector path between High Hill Park and Tranquility Trails has been completed, which means we will not be running on any public roads, so we can spread our races out so that we don't have hundreds of runners on the course at the same time. The 5K Run/Walk will be an out and back on all paved surfaces. The 5K races will run in heats at 9 AM, 10AM, and 11AM, to limit the numbers of runners on the course at the same time. The first 100 runners to register will start at 9:00 AM, the next 100 at 10:00 AM and the next 100 at 11:00AM. Please choose the earliest start time available when you register. The 8K will be 3 miles on paved surfaces and two miles of trail running and will start at 7:45 AM. This race is also limited to 100 runners (no walkers, please). 8K and 5K top finishers, male and female,  will each receive awards valued between $75.00 - $150.00. 8K and 5K 2nd and 3rd place finishers, male and female, will each receive awards valued @ $50.00.  Age category awards will also be given. All awards will be mailed or delivered - there will not be an onsite awards ceremony. See the race descriptions below. Rain or shine.

The 08085 Run/Walk/Sit: One mild-mannered zip code … with an event boasting five fantastic options!  Join us for one or more of the 4th annual 08085 Run possibilities.  In zip code order, choose from:

1. A 0.8 Mile kids’ run/walk (1.29K) - Course along a flat, paved trail within Locke Avenue Park.

2. A 0.8 Mile walk (VIRTUAL) - Choose your own course and walk at your leisure.

3. A 0K sit (approximately no miles) - Course along a comfortable chair of your choosing. All the stuff with little-to-none of the sweat!

4. An 8K run (4.96 miles) - Road and Trail. Mostly out-and-back course mostly along High Hill Road but only featuring gentle, rolling hills less imposing than the road’s name suggests. 3 Miles on the paved 5K course with another 2 mile on Tranquility Trails, unpaved mostly on a 20' wide dirt trail bordering wooded areas, but there are about 200 yards of trail (with tree roots) through wooded wetland areas. Depending on weather conditions, some mud may be involved.

5. A 5K run/walk (3.1 miles) - Less-challenging paved course Starting in Locke Ave Park, through High Hill Park, alongside High Hill Road to Tranquility Trails and back..

1.2 MILE BAY SWIM

Sunday September 19, 2021
Registration Information

Location

23rd Street and Ocean Drive Avenue Public Dock (NEW START LOCATION!!)
Avalon, NJ 08202

NEW COURSE with a NEW SWIM START at the 23rd Street Public Dock, not over the 21st Street bridge at 5th Avenue. From the AYC you exit the club and go to the end of 7th Street and Ocean Drive. Turn right and head south down Ocean Drive until you get to the 23rd Street on the right. (This is the swim course from the July Point to Point last year.) It will not be as fast as 2021 as we are entering the water just after high tide, it still will be quick at the end!

A point to point 1.2 mile bay swim with proceeds to benefit the Avalon Fire Department that coordinates the water safety for our events. Donations will be going to the Avalon Yacht Club Charitable Foundation. The swim will be a time trial format based on your estimated swim times. The swim course is on the back half of the Cedar Island 5K Swim. This is a great event to familiarize yourself with open water swimming with a group in a protected bay, the surroundings and key site locations on it. Our goal is to provide an opportunity that will give you the confidence for safe and successful swimming events. Please read the updated protocols, guidelines due to COVID 19 along with the swim safety tips for the event PRIOR to registering for the swim and know that you must follow these guidelines in order to to participate in the swim.  IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP YOURSELF AND OTHERS SAFE AND HEALTHY!

6:45-7:15 AM: Check in at the Avalon Yacht Club. Please park in the far right side of the lot upon entering the club. You will check in by swim times by the youth club house that is located on your left when you entered the lot. If you arrive earlier than your time slot, remain in your car. YOUR time slot will be reconfirmed on FRIDAY.

SWIM TIME Under 25 Minutes: Check in at 7:15 am BIB #1-25

SWIM TIME 26-30 Minutes: Check in at 7:10 am BIB #26-50

SWIM TIME 31-39 Minutes: Check in at 7:00 am BIB #51-75

SWIM TIME 40-45 Minutes: Check in at 6:500 am BIB #76-100

SWIM TIME Over 45 Minutes: Check in at 6:45 am BIB #101-125

You must wear a mask when getting out of your car and practice social distancing. A quick non contact temperature check will be done before before signing in and getting a zip lock baggie which will include the following items: swim cap, timing chip, custom DeFeet socks, and a disposable mask. You must wear this mask once you arrive at swim start. We will give you a clear gear bag at pick up and labeled with your number for your gear at the swim start.

A bib list will be emailed September 17th after registration closes at noon. You must self body mark your number on your left hand prior to arriving and check in at the AYC. We have a gear drop on site to leave for your post swim needs. There will be no nutrition or hydration provided post event. Do not linger or social gather with other swimmers after you pick up. NO restrooms. Plan accordingly. Do not gather on the dock until we begin swim staging  at 7:45 am.

There will be NO SHUTTLE again (as of now, hoping it could change!) this year to the swim start due to COVID 19. It is just not safe and feasible to have you all packed in the jitney. How do I get to the swim start? You need to find your own way to the start. Have someone drop you at 20th Street dock after you check in and pick up. The other option is walk (or run) to the swim start. (NYC triathlon, PHLY triathlon, and others have done this option.) We will have s sneaker/sandal drop area at the swim start and bring these back to the AYC for you!. THERE IS NO WARM UP SWIM!! Participants will remain on the dock and then down the sidewalk maintaining social distance, following signage. Masks remain ON and covering your mouth and nose. You can hold it with your hand after you remove the straps prior to staging while on the dock. Drop them in the trash can just prior to entering the water. No race meeting at the dock. Things will  move quickly so be prepared by having read ALL documents on the race page here and in the pre race email.  Swimmers will be counted in and cross a timing mat at anywhere from 7:50-8:10 am depending on swimmer final numbers. Swimmers will self seed according to swim time when entering the water. It will be time trial start to maintain social distancing, thus seeding the faster swimmers first so no swimmers are overtaken and passed in the water. There is a 45 minute cut off time to complete the swim and finish at the Avalon Yacht Club which starts when you enter the water so do not worry if your are near the end of the start! Swimmers will exit by a swim ladder located on the end of the large floating dock at AYC. There will be a buoy marking the dock/finish line. Keep this buoy on your right and turn 90 degrees to swim up to the dock ladder. YOU MUST REMOVE YOUR OWN TIMING CHIP ONCE YOU HAVE EXITED UP THE RAMP AT AYC.  It is recommended to keep your own time if possible to confirm times. This is a practice swim! There are NO AWARDS so please be respectful and keep your order upon exit or waiting to climb the ladder.  You may also head up into the cove on the left side of the dock to waist level water and pull yourself out up on to the dock. Maintaining social distance from other finishers. Do not gather, pick up your gear and promptly clear the area.

*DO NOT GATHER AT THE SWIM START DOCK AFTER PICK UP UNTIL 7:45 AM. There is no warm up swim!! Volunteers will be there with their SUP and kayaks preparing to get on the water for your safety during the swim. Once the dock is cleared, you will self seed by your expected finish times, just as you did at check in, fastest times on deck on the dock and followed by the times in sequential order.

*7:45 am Seeding Swim Times on the dock : Under 25 Minutes, 26-30 Minutes, 31-39, 40-45 Minutes, 45 plus Minutes. The back bay is nice and wide along the entire course. On water safety patrol will be there to guide you. BE AWARE of conditions on both sides of you, as well as potential swimmers next to you. SITE and know your surroundings.

A commemorative beach towel will be given to each participant at the Avalon Yacht Club Finish, after you have removed and turned in your timing chip. Thank you for joining us for our final swim event!

We encourage everyone to run or walk the 3.1 mile distance anywhere they choose, between June 1st & 15th. Please upload your times and photos by end of the day June 15th.  Everyone who signs up by May 8th will get a T-Shirt if they choose.  We will recognize the Top 3 Female & Male finishers as well as the Top 3 Female and Male Avon residents on our Facebook page shortly after June 15th.

Covid-19 has been a dark cloud hanging over all of us for more than a year.  Thanks to devoted scientists and other public health leaders, and this community's commitment to responsible behaviors, there is hope that we can emerge from the pandemic.  Come join us for an outdoor celebration of our community's road to recovery from Covid-19.  The festivities will start with a kids 0.5 mile fun run at 12:30pm, followed by a 2 mile walk at 12:45pm, and then the premier event: a USATF sanctioned live 5km road race on our new certified course at 1:00pm in beautiful Bernardsville, NJ.

The live race will comply with all then-applicable New Jersey Executive Orders and New Jersey Department of Health and CDC guidelines in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.  See the Covid-19 Protocols tab for more details.

The live race includes a supersoft commemorative t-shirt, which is available as an optional add-on for the virtual race and the kids fun run.  See The Shirt tab for a picture and a link to a size chart.

There will be post-race snacks and refreshments, including a visit from the Kona Ice Truck for the runners as they finish!

All proceeds to benefit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and the School of Saint Elizabeth.

Fibromyalgia affects us all, one of the greatest challenges our community faces is lack of awareness (both within the medical community and the community at-large) which leads to isolation, fear, and depression. As the FCSA works to address the gaps in medical care and supportive services one of our biggest priorities is bringing our community together. Embracing our diversity. Celebrating our differences...and above all uniting our community.

There is strength in unity. We are One, United We Walk!

Virtual Caterpillar Walk for Fibromyalgia

Event starts at 9:00AM
As communities across the country and around the world face the COVID-19 Pandemic, it has been clear that the disparities faced by underserved and orphan communities have been exacerbated by the pandemic. This is also true for the fibromyalgia community. There is so much we are learning about COVID-19 and the longstanding health, economic, community, and social impacts will undoubtedly weigh heavily on those living with fibromyalgia. Today, the FCSA is committing to help mitigate the social impact COVID-19 will have on our community by introducing fibromyalgia specific virtual town halls, work groups, and gathering to bring our community together during this time. We will launch on with a virtual town hall meeting so that we can build a virtual response based on your input. We are also working to empower and further the work of our Fibro Youth Advocates who will be hosting a web series designed to connect young people living with or affected by fibromyalgia. We are also launching our Virtual Walk Program which historically has been geared at raising awareness, education, funds and building community. This year the need to build, unite, and strengthen our community is more desperately needed than ever before. As such, we are working on launching a virtual walk to take place on Saturday, May 9th and a Virtual Toast on May 12th to celebrate Fibromyalgia Awareness Day.

The 2nd Annual Jim Whelan Open Water Festival, featuring the 55th Annual Around The Island® Swim, will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2021 in and around Absecon Island, NJ, which is made up of the cities of Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate, and Longport.

Hosted by Green Whales, Inc., the inaugural Jim Whelan Open Water Festival successfully resurrected this historic and challenging 22.75mi/36.6km marathon swim for its 54th installment in 2019 in honor of the late Jim Whelan; a former NJ State Senator, Mayor of Atlantic City, member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol, Atlantic City teacher, and Atlantic City High School Swim Coach.

"Honoring nostalgia in service to our community."

Through our efforts and the generous support of our sponsors, we continue to accomplish our two main goals:

  • To increase awareness of "Whelan Whales"--a free swim lesson and water safety program for the children of Atlantic City.
  • Honor the historical significance of the Around The Island® Swim to the Absecon Island community and generations of lifeguard families.

The history of this legendary marathon swim began back in 1953 when two ACBP members, Ed "Dutch" Stetser and Edward Solitare, made a $100 bet to see who could circumnavigate Absecon Island first.  It was Solitare who won, completing the grueling course in 13:30, with Stetser only an hour behind him.  Throughout the following half-century, numerous international open water swimming athletes competed in the race, which was eventually called a "world championship ocean marathon."

The Around The Island® current record holder, as documented on marathonswimmers.org, remains Stéphane Gomez, from France, set in 2004 with a time of 6:37.09.   The winners from the 54th Around The Island™ Swim in 2019 are:

  • First male and overall winner: William “Bill” Leonard, from Canada, at 8:23:27
  • First relay: Swim RVA Hammerheads, Steven “Craig” Dunbar and Teresa “Tess” Andres from the United States, at 9:29:56
  • First female: Charlotte Brynn, from the United States, finishing at 9:31:28

What will you be doing on Sunday, August 1, 2020?  Will you become a part of history?  Will you support a worthwhile cause?  Do you want to challenge your open water swimming skills?  Register to participate in the 2nd Annual Jim Whelan Open Water Festival, featuring the 55th Annual Around The Island® Swim!

Event starts at 10:30AM
Please join us for a wonderful event. Kick off by The Mayor of Paramus and Senator Paul Sarlo. Assuming all will be safe in the world, our event will be an in-person walk (will be switched to virtual if it is deemed not safe by September 2021). 30 Days for Clean Water

Saturday May 1, 2021
Registration Information

Location

9 Wilshire run
Scotch Plains, NJ 07076

This is our second annual "30 Days for Clean Water" event where as a community we try and run, hike, walk, or bike as many miles as we can for clean water to receive a donation from our pledgers.

This year, if we can complete 10,000 miles, we will receive a donation of $10,000. 100% of the donations go towards clean water. Any miles completed during May 1 - May 30th count towards this goal.
1 mile ran/walked = $1 donation

So how does it work?
Create a free profile on RunSignUp and join as a team or as an individual and try and complete as many miles as you can! It's that easy.
To claim your miles, visit the results tab and upload how many miles you have completed!

Does it cost anything to register?
Nope. Just go enjoy being outside. You are given the option to donate upon registration but are not required to.
